For the first time in history, a dream has been recorded, on an island where man and beast live together in peaceful contentment. It is a land where ART MAKES LIFE, and where dreams guide one's destiny.
In 1995, Charles van Sandwyk created a wondrous collection of art from a dream. Adrift in the ethers of emotional and physical trauma from a taxi cab accident in Fiji –both his artistic career and the sight in his left eye were in jeopardy – he dreamt of what really matters as he sailed to an Island of Birds. The fantastical flora and fauna of the island lingered clearly in his mind's eye: "... I set forth to record all that I saw ... So I sat and sketched the way I felt life should become."
Charles now recalls the dream as a transformation, a freeing of the spirit. His vivid recollections have been compiled into this exquisite aware-winning trade edition book in which the birds' wisdom and humour flow freely in the artist's own calligraphy.
Handstitched and finally crafted with images tipped on by hand, the beautiful Sketches from the Dream Island of Birds is truly a treasure to humanity.
