Artist Notes: "The octopus is one of my favourite animals. They are one of the smartest animals known. They know how to undo a childproof bottle, can be incredible escape artists and have dynamic ways of camouflaging. They have eight arms, three hearts, blue blood and nine brains!
My fascination with octopus came as a child. Both my parents were scuba divers and my dad used to wrestle octopus. Back in the 1950s a bunch of guys would get together and see who could bring up the largest octopus. It was a bit of a dangerous sport and now seems cruel to be dragging such an intelligent animal out of its den. However, Back in the day it was one of the diving sports. My dad has many trophies showing off his large octopus wins.
I still find octopus incredibly mysterious. I love to paint them and wonder what they must think when they see humans. I will NEVER eat octopus. It would feel too much like cannibalism to eat such a clever animal."
