Artist's Notes: Eleanor was another inspiration from my father, who was an Octopus Wrester. He and his buddies used to see who could bring up the largest Giant Pacific Octopus to the surface of the water, during a scuba dive on the southern shores of Vancouver Island. There were trophies and prizes for the winner. No octopus was harmed during this contest – they were all set free at the end.
I named this Octopus Eleanor with the idea that if I anthropomorphized her, and people saw an octopus with a name, they would be less likely to eat them as food. Octopus are amazingly smart creatures! Just do an internet search and find fantastic videos on their intelligence. Did you know they have three hearts and nine brains? My hope is that Eleanor will highlight the beauty of these Cephalopods and keep more of them safe from the dinner tables.
