"The giant surfaced right beside us while aboard a Rain coast Conservation Foundations' research vessel "Achiever" off BC's Central Coast near the Great Bear Rainforest. As the water sheeted off its massive fluke like a beautiful waterfall we could see all the nicks and scars that life had given it. Humpbacks first reappeared around our local Discovery Islands in 2011 after they were hunted almost to extinction in the area in 1869. Last summer over 90 individual whales were routinely spotted feeding around these islands. With a bit of help and protection, future generations will continue to chase these magnificent waterfalls for years to come."
