Tony Kirby
I have always lived on the island, and have observed that the natural world around me is in a state of flux. There is always a sense of movement both seen and unseen. I am drawn to the random qualities of things I find whether natural or man made and the possibility of giving new life to the them.
Most important, in creating these pieces, is not depicting something already in my mind, but feeling their inherent energy and movement. As they develop, I begin to make an emotional connection which spurs me on toward their completion. Having worked as a fabricator in my working life, I am comfortable with materials, tools and finishes.
As well, in the past, my focus has been with painting in various mediums, and I find many of the same elements of picture making may be applied in three dimensional work. In particular, I am interested in the role of colour in this sculptural work. I believe that art
is a life long pursuit and that there is still much to be created in this vein.
