Artist's Notes: I've always had a fascination with the Great Blue Heron. There are many that live at a beach near my house. I have counted up to thirty wading in the shallow water during mid and low tide. The heron look like extremely big birds, but surprisingly, they only weigh about five or six pounds. They seem like prehistoric birds. It is always odd to see the heron, with their webbed feet, perched up in a tree. They nest in the trees too! There are some heron rookeries nearby and we often hear them squawking as they are flying from the nesting area. They are majestic yet gangly, elegant yet awkward. They are one of my favourite birds to paint with all the long, flowing feathers and dramatic necks. The Great Blue Heron is an icon of our mid Vancouver Island shores.
