Effie Baker

Effie Baker is a long time resident of the Sea-to-Sky corridor, living in the beautiful Paradise Valley, 25 km north of Squamish, B.C.

While working as a whitewater river guide for over 25 years, she acquired an appreciation of the natural world that inspires her work.

Effie began taking courses in fine arts at Emily Carr, at Vancouver Community College, and through the Vancouver School Board. Metalsmithing became her focus because of its infinite possibilities. In 2008, Effie began making jewelry as a cottage industry in her cabin in the woods.

My aim is to create beautiful, quality, jewelry that appeals to people who are drawn to individual and unique pieces. I like to create evolving pieces that are both contemporary and classic. My inspiration is in simple, natural, and organic forms. Each piece is handmade. No two pieces are exactly alike and show that they are worked by hand.

Effie uses a variety of materials to create each handcrafted piece. Fine and sterling silver are used to fabricate pieces that include necklaces, pendants, earrings, rings, bracelets and cuff links. Effie is very attracted to colour and uses materials such as clay, resin, pearls, semiprecious stones, shell, leather, sea glass, and other natural objects like beach pebbles.

Originally from Nova Scotia, Effie is definitely a coastal person.

I spend as much time as possible at my cabin on Texada Island, in the midst of the Salish Sea, where I collect the pebbles that find their way onto my workbench, after being inspired by the sea.
