Artists Notes:
A Big Leaf Maple of the Cowichan Valley was the inspiration for the "One Tree Exhibition" in 2019-2020. Seventy artists took the story of this 200 year-old tree to create works to honour its long history. I was inspired to create the painting "Mabel's Big Leaf Maple".
Working on a large slab cut from the tree, I experimented with natural materials from the tree's environment. I handcrafted charcoal drawing sticks from the tree's branches, green ink from young maple leaves, and created pigments from the silt found on the shores of the Cowichan River.
In working with these materials I experienced the textures, colours and smells connected to the land and the place where the maple tree once stood.
The project is done in memory of my good friend Mable Fleetwood.
