Vern Black

While living in Roberts Creek, on the Sunshine Coast, I developed a keen interest in wildlife, especially wildfowl.

Born in Powell River, raised in Roberts Creek, Vern went on to join the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring after 25 yrs of service. His after-service career led him to become a Service Manager in Calgary before retiring in Qualicum Beach.

While living in Calgary, Vern sought out professional instruction, to hone his carving skills.

We came annually, from Calgary, to The Brant Festival Carving Show here in Oceanside and I won quite a few awards.

In 2000, we made the big move to Qualicum Beach, where I joined the local Oceanside Carving group. We are a widely diverse group of artists; carvers and wood turners, each person bringing something new to share.

I enjoy the challenge of starting with a plain block of wood and a pattern, then working it through all the stages to produce the finished piece of art.

As a child I showed an interest in carving, painting and mounting birds on wall plaques; I still have those early carvings hanging in my home.
