Although I now live on Vancouver Island, I was born and raised in Saskatchewan.
Syd's family lived in several towns and cities in Saskatchewan, until his father got a teaching position in Swift Current, SK. In his spare time, my dad liked to build things, and many times as I was growing up, I either watched him work or helped him with his projects.
Throughout school and college, Syd enjoyed drawing, creating, and fixing things. His love of drawing took him to Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (S.A.I.T.), in Calgary, Alberta where he studied drafting. My skills in creativity and drawing gave me the opportunity to work as a draftsman and later a senior graphic designer in the Calgary oil industry.
During the Calgary years, I met and married a wonderful woman and we raised our two children. No matter which home we lived in, there was always something that needed repairing and renovating. I soon had a workshop in my garage, and I began building and creating projects, rooms, furniture and unique gifts for friends and family.
Since retiring and moving to Vancouver Island, Sye has more time to spend in his shop creating decorative vases, candle sticks, wall hangings and bowls from locally grown wood. He has been blessed by the encouragement of friends and family to share his creations with the bigger world. Now everyone gets to find joy in Syd's one-of-a-kind pieces.
It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to bring out the character of the wood in each new piece.
